Polished and Stained Concrete Floors

Polished and stained concrete floors are quickly becoming a trend in homes throughout the country.During my visit to the Atlanta Street of Dreams 2007 home show, I saw this in several of the $1M+ homes that were on display.  The rooms of choice for the polished concrete floors were the finished basements, covered porches, patios and garages.  I do not remember seeing a single home with polished and stained concrete floors in last year’s Atlanta Street of Dreams, but this year it, along with raw stone, was high on the builders list.

If you look closely at the photo above, you will see that the concrete floor was not polished to a very smooth finish, but left with a defining texture. On the last concrete grinding sequence, a stain and sealer was applied to the floor, and ground into the top layer of the concrete.  You can see and feel the texture of the floor and it is not at all slippery.  These floors had no special stone of particles for in the concrete for decoration, but the simple design complimented the stone fireplaces, brick walls and open timbers of the finished basements, patios and wine cellars.

This technique is not only fashionable and trendy but polished concrete floors are much less expensive than any other type of flooring you can buy to cover concrete. It looks great, durable and you can stain it to match any color interior.  Polished concrete floors are a smart choice.
