Need a retaining wall in your yard?
Building a stone retaining wall by The Grand Rapids Press
Building a stone retaining wall can be accomplished in a weekend, provided you have help and materials. Here are the basic steps involved:
Step 1: Dig out terraces, making sure they tilt slightly backward so sand and crushed stone can be added.
Step 2: Add a layer of coarse sand topped with crushed stone. This allows for drainage and better placement of stone
Step 3: Position stones, nearly burying the first course. Stones should be horizontally level and tip slightly backward to allow for settling. Overlap stones backward slightly so first course is slightly farther forward than the second, and so on.
Step 4: Cut a strip of landscape fabric and position it behind the stone to prevent soil from washing forward. Fill behind the stone wall with soil. Repeat the four-step process for additional levels.
